Grow Where You are Planted

1.31.2014

The phrase "Grow where you are planted" has really been on my heart lately. Over the past year I have done an immense amount of growing. Spiritually, mentally, with a less anxious heart and closer to my husband. All amazing things.

You know what I keep asking myself? What if we hadn't made this move? What if we were still in Texas? Would we have "grown" just as much.

As much as I'd hate my momma to hear, I know for a fact that we wouldn't have. I think often times we would have gotten stuck in our old lives and routines which didn't accommodate for a God in the center as well as putting each other first. We were often put others first before our marriage, and our Savior on the back burner.

In Jeremiah 17: 7-8 we are encouraged to grow out of our old mundane roots and grow roots of our own.
“But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord,
    whose confidence is in him.
They will be like a tree planted by the water
that sends out its roots by the stream.
It does not fear when heat comes;
    its leaves are always green.
It has no worries in a year of drought
and never fails to bear fruit.”
Jeremiah 17:7-8

So much of that verse speaks to me and tells me to mirror just that. Leave my anxieties, trust in my faith and ultimately make the best out of where you are planted and always, always, always, trust in Him.

How can you translate this into your life?
You know that emptiness or pit in your stomach? Yeah you know what I mean…that burning feeling when you want to do something that may be out of your comfort zone or against what others may think is cool.
Do it. Full out, dive in deep and find that you feel happy in your faith and that you're backed by something much "cooler" than others may see.

Still not resonating? Go to that church and see how it feels. Sign up for that mission trip. Sign up for the daunting women's retreat that sounds so scary. Volunteer your time, your services, your money.
Or simply take time to be still…that in itself is one that is hard for most people. Enjoy moments of stillness and dig your roots in deep that you may grow and bear fruit.

And most of all…if I can do it, you can DEFINITELY do it!
P.S. Like my new little fancy smanchy planter up there? A DIY is coming your way soon!

Cheers not Jeers: Get Fit Episode

1.29.2014

I can't believe that Cheers not Jeers is in its 10th week. Can you even believe how many cheers that is? It's a TON and I'm thankful that you are here (maybe again) this week to help spread a little cheer.

As bloggers, more importantly as women, it is often easy to get caught up in the strains and drains of life. Lets face it, life can just flat out SUCK at times. And I don't know about you, but I don't know anyone who doesn't love a sweet compliment or a simple thumbs up thrown their way. As motivation to spur a little female bonding around the "interwebs" I introduce to you this weekly link up "Cheers not Jeers"

This is your chance to build up some of your favorite women and showcase their talent through your blog and spread a little sisterly love.
How it works:
  • Every Wednesday join in the link up by including "Cheers" about your favorite bloggers. These are bloggers who spur your creativity, touch your heart, or keep you sane laughing.
  • Post a small shout out or devoted post to your blogger loves, creating more community between each other, while posting a link to their blog in your post so others many be inspired.
  • After linking up, find a new face, visit a new blog, introduce yourself and send them a "cheer"
Highly Encouraged:
There are no specific "rules" about following certain individuals in the link up, but just strongly encouraging women to seek out one another and offering praise instead of the negativity we can often see floating around the world wide web. I will personally visit each blog in the link up to see what an awesome impact this is making.

Cheers not Jeers Episode 10
Today is a 2 for 1 special as these two gals are all about getting fit, feeling confident and overall being healthy in the new year.
So if you're like me…your New Years motivation has officially left the building. I had a great thing going, I was more energized and lost a few lbs…soooo whats the deal? I just crave the junk.

So I'm really leaning on these sweet gals to keep me motivated as we head into chocolate season (Valentines). Each Monday they have a "Get Fit" link up where you can share your journey and progress to a healthier you in 2014.

Life Style Love

Samantha from "Life Style Love" is a spunky gal who just so happens to be a hockey wife…this is something I cannot relate to, but I find absolutely intriguing. Hockey is the ONE and only sport I don't quite follow as far as rules go. Don't cringe Sam! Let's go to a game together or heck I'll just start with her "you know you're a hockey wife when" post and we can go from there. I promise it will be fun!

Brittany is someone who I just KNOW I could sit and drink coffee with and talk for hours and hours. Her kind spirit and motivating words often keep me going and motivated to share my heart with others when I feel like I should contain it. Happy is a Choice is her sweet space where over the course of the month she will be sharing dating mistakes you don't want to make. I'm so glad to have found this sweet blogger and her genuine heart!

So go check out these wonderful blogs and be sure to join in their Monday "Get Fit" posts where you can lean on others for a little motivation…I know I will!

Hooray, it's today…again!

1.27.2014

If we were having coffee today…

//I'd tell you that I just CAN'T do hot coffee if it's from Dunkin and I can't do iced coffee if it's from Starbucks.
//I'd tell you I'm attending a terrarium designing class this week, and I couldn't be more excited.
//We would discuss my love for the new "Oxblood" trend…no it's not gross, check it out.
//I'd ask you if you knew what the word "Poiema" meant, and then I'd tell you of the amazing knowledge I gained from amazing women this weekend.
// I'd tell you I can't wait for Spring to be here…the end.
// I'd share with you that I'm missing home, but couldn't be happier with who I've become in this short year, and that I can't wait to see what else comes my way.

What would you share?

Cheers not Jeers Episode 9
Do you know Kalyn from "Geeze, Louise"? No? Well you better hop on over to her space to say hello! As a fellow RN I knows the woes of during a 13-14+ hour shift you always seem to have perfect blog topics and then once you sit down at the keyboard…nada. Check out her most recent post "Five Tips for Better Writing Productivity. Stop by and send a few to cheers to Kalyn. P.S. Her "you know you're a nurse when…" is spot on!
Meet Jordyn from Pretty Lovely.  Although she may live completely across the country, I love spending time in her blog world. As a fashion blogger, Jordyn is celebrating her 1st blog birthday. Cheers to that! I always love tuning in to see what perfect outfits she puts together next. And I'm secretly jealous because I've attempted "fashion blogging" and failed miserably. Not to mention she has a PRECIOUS Etsy shop that is a must see.

Mason Jar Salad Saver

1.21.2014

Many of you remember this photo from my Instagram a couple weeks back. I received a lot of questions about the "how to's" of this pretty amazing, not to mention easy weekday lunch extravaganza. I had read Pinterest promises that these magic mixtures would last an entire week in the fridge…an entire week? This skeptic put it to the test, and I was pleasantly surprised. After reading through a few "recipes" I have come up with my own recipe for this belly pleasing, scale pleasing lunch alternative.

Rule #1 of Mason Jar Salad Saver club…DON'T LET THE LETTUCE TOUCH THE DRESSING! MUST KEEP SEPARATE!
In order to keep lettuce fresh over the course of my 5 day trial no lettuce was ever able to touch the salad dressing to prevent any browning of the lettuce.

You Will Need:
Pint size Mason Jars
Lettuce/ Greens
I used a mixture of Romaine, Kale and Brussel Sprouts
"Rough Vegetables"
I used carrots, celery and corn
Secondary Vegetables
I used chick peas and mushrooms
Salad Dressing of Choice
I made a ginger shallot dressing recipe to follow

Order of Layers
Starting from the bottom of the mason jar
//1st: Dressing-desired amount
//2nd: Rough Vegetables-enough to cover layer of dressing
//3rd: Secondary Vegetables-desired amount
//4th: Lettuce/Greens-packed tight to top of mason jar

Seal Mason Jar then place in refrigerator until used. These were so yummy that I was only able to let them stay in the refrigerator for 4 days (before being eaten) but they would have been great for another 2 or 3 days sealed.

Recipe for Ginger Shallot Dressing:
Juice from 1 lemon
2 shallot buds diced
3 Tbs EVOO
1/4 tsp ginger
1/2 tsp dijon mustard
pinch ground pepper

Mix together and place at bottom of mason jar! Viola! Enjoy!

1.20.2014

Well howdy there folks! Happy Monday! As the hubby is off work, I'm going to stay off the computer and spend a little time with him, and away from the keyboard.

I did want to share with you a little gem from the night of my birthday. I will tell you, one of the things that had me swooning over Joe was that he was an amazing dancer/ two-stepper. As in all the girls wanted a chance to dance with him. Since it was my birthday, I convinced him to twirl me around the living room and capture it. Enjoy! And don't mind Star Wars in the background.
Like the song? Do you know the amazingness (yes that's a word) of Josh Abbott? No?
Google She's Like Texas…SWOON!

Today I wanted to take a minute to thank everyone who joined the Cheers not Jeers link up last week!
As promised Random number generator selected a number to correspond to the post in the link up that has been chosen to be featured as the newest "Upstate NY" ad.

The number was random 1-6 (I took our post out of the running) and the winner is: Kate @ A Drawer Full of Stuff

Cheers not Jeers Episode 8

Meet The Florkens, a ridiculous funny duo that share a blog space that is brilliant! I admire Adam for bringing his part to this predominantly driven estrogen land. They are both brilliantly brainy with a sense of humor that will have you rolling around. Not to mention Kate and I had a lot of the same "issues" at our weddings.

Always Ashten
Ashten from Always Ashten is about the coolest thing since sliced bread…I joke not. What is also amazing is that she is one of the amazing bloggers who supports the Young and Brave foundation which is dedicated to those who are battling cancers which are often terminal at such a young age. She also hosts Vlog Like a Boss on Fridays which is never disappointing on her witty end! Always a good time around her part of the blogsphere.

Yammering Yankee
Meg is the Yammering Yankee, a Northerner "stuck" in the South… Meg lets trade places! One of the reasons I love this gal is she and I know when Julian Michaels is definitely photo shopped…we just have the eye. Hah! I love her most recent post about getting back into the workout mode during the new year. She is also a supporter of the Young and Brave foundation which makes her even more amazing!

I'll have to send Mother Nature a thank you card

1.13.2014

A bit of a delayed post, but as I do love this space to help me remember our "Auspicious Adventures" while in New York, I wanted to document my "birthday gift" from the ever so lovable Mother Nature this year.
Yes this sweet 'ol gal dropped over an inch of snow…just for my birthday!
Since snow is still quite the novel idea for us Texans, I grabbed the hubby (forgot the Canon) and had an impromptu iPhone snow shoot.
Enjoy!

P.S. Exciting news at the bottom…come on and scroll down….you know you want to!

I want to remind you all about Cheers not Jeers this week…wait you haven't heard of this awesome new linkup happening in your neck of the woods every Wednesday? Well jump on over here STAT to get the details so you can spread positivity with us this Wednesday.

peace.

1.10.2014

peace.

Why is it that we want, and want, and want, long for, then want more? I'm referencing all walks of life

Wants for…
More money
Longer hair
Smaller waist line
More friends
A bigger following (blog related)
A house
More possessions (clothes, makeup, shoes)

Always a want…

I strongly believe that wanting more in life can be empowering, and lead to successes in life. But are we wanting the right things?

What if we wanted for
Less negativity
Bigger blessings
Less poverty
Less sadness or tears
More healthy
More selflessness
More volunteering

These are the things that will really fill the voids in our lives. They will make our wants much more empowering and fulfilling rather than starving for more.

I am 110% guilty of wanting everything in the first list and I know I should long for the second list. Here's to finding peace in not having the possessions or looks that bring only temporary satisfaction but to longing for the wants that will bring lasting impressions to those around us.

I recently came across a beautiful verse highlighted on another bloggers page and it spoke volumes to me.
More from her sweet space

Cheers not Jeers Episode 7

Meet Stormy, the brains behind "Life's a Dance". I have just found this sweet blog and I have loved getting to know her sweet family! 2013 was a whirlwind of a year for Stormy. She was a fresh newlywed at the beginning of the year, and not soon after she discovered she was pregnant with their ever so adorable Garrett. What a year that would be! Your family growing by a whole new person?! As you can see I'm still digesting that whole family thing. But reading sweet blogs like Stormy's softens my heart to the idea.

Meet Jordan, another new face to my sidebar as well as the brains behind "DJ Petersen". First off we have a few things in common…like fear of birds and being newlyweds! I loved this recent post from Jordan about a few things she has learned from marriage. I agree and just have to share this recipe for marriage with you guys.

Bri, over at "Faithful Footprints" is another gal I'd like to share with you today! She is woman, who is strong in her faith and a Southern girl after my own heart. It can sometimes be hard to share your faith through the blogging community and I commend her for it!

Who will you be sharing your cheers with today? Link up with us and come back next week for more Cheers not jeers!

Meet one of my favorite bloggers!

This birthday cake slice of life

1.03.2014

As I reflect on that past year and the woman who I was in the new 2013, I think of words such as timid,  repressed, anxious, filled with worry and angst. As I venture in to not only a new year, but a new step in life I am proud to say those words have turned into peaceful, outgoing, calm, able to express and embrace my creativity and dreams and most of all filled with His joy.

If last year as I turned 24, you would have told me that just a short year later I would feel liberated from anxiety (mostly), free to be me and loving my new home in the North East…I would think you were plain crazy. There are times too, I feel sad that I'm enjoying this so much, because I should be spending these sweet times with my family. But they are my #1 supporters and fuel my love for this temporary slice of life. They have all come and visit and though they want us home ASAP they support this step of our life.

Here's to the new me, the new year and the year of being 25. Thanks for all of the love friends!

Cheers not Jeers Episode 6

Today I wanted to spread some cheer to amazing bloggers of 2013. So many women I have connected with through blogging have had one heck of a year! It has been comforting to see women digging deep to find their strength when handling what life faces them. It has been a joy to see them prosper as well as enjoy when morale comes from other bloggers. I'm telling you this positivity stuff is contagious!

Kenzie- started nursing school this year, which I know first hand is one of the most challenging times in a nurse's life. So far she is rocking it as well as raising a precious baby girl in their brand new home! Hats off to Kenzie for going after her dreams and remaining sane at the same time! I'm rooting for you!

Gayle- is a superwoman in human clothes. Her zest for life is contagious and her faith is one that I admire. She went through something incredibly terrifying, one that she couldn't have tackled without her faith. Read why and how she is a previvor when she decided to have a preventative double mastectomy

Catalyn- had quite an eventful 2013 one filled with close calls and blessings. I have thoroughly enjoyed watching her pregnancy journey and the things she is learning. When it is my turn one day, I will be forever grateful for women like Catalyn to help me figure the whole parenting thing out. Catalyn was in Boston only 100 yards from the finish line when the Boston Marathon bombings occurred. What a terrifying day, and one that I can't even begin to imagine.

Anna- is an amazing runner and one who I looked towards for motivation while training for my half marathon. This girl can RUN and never let's anything get in her way. She is raising two boys and has a busy schedule but managed to run 13 races this year, not to mention placing first in her division a majority of the time. You can see the dedication to her running as well as her family which I completely
admire!

Last but definitely not least…
Amber- is one fabulous gal who I have just recently stalked/read her blog entirely  discovered. Her sweet family has been given many trials this year, and each time they have come out stronger. Read about her family's heartache and journey through dementia. I am selfish and saying that I hope I never know the hurt her family has dealt with, but what an amazing testament of faith this family has. Gives me goosebumps just thinking about it!

Do you know any bloggers who persevered through 2013 only to come out better in the end? I hope you share this week!
