When living with a boy finally dawns on me

2.28.2014

Growing up, my dad was the only "boy" who lived in our house (including the dogs) and I must say he was a tidy "boy".
In college I always had girl roommates (naturally) and while we could easily create a messy apartment, it was never "boy" worthy.

Weekly, if not daily I run into issues pieces of my sweet husband, that ever so lovingly remind me that I live with a B-O-Y.

Phantom handprints:
I know I live with a boy when, while cleaning the bathroom, I'm scrubbing the porcelain throne and look up to see outlines of hand prints on the wall. As in, if I were standing up while peeing and needed to brace myself against a nice wall, handprints.
As we can all assume I don't stand while using the restroom, it must the boy I live with.
And let's not get me started with how large the toilet bowl is, and the fact that said "stander upper" tends to "miss". Alright, enough.

Laundry mishaps:
I know I live with a boy when his white socks started turning off-white with a hue of blue from the denim jeans he was washing them with. Yep all clothes get washed together, no sorting.
Thankfully this boy's wife stepped in and his socks are back to pearly white. Thanks Clorox!

Measuring ladles:
I know I live with a boy when after a delicious crock pot meal has been simmering all day, my helpful husband serves the above soup with a measuring cup. No need to mention that we have multiple fully functioning ladles.

Rough and tough:
I know I live with a boy when I can no longer leave glass pieces or delicate anything within 2 inches of the end of a cabinet. I cannot count the number of things that have fallen off counters, entry tables, TV stands etc due to my burly husband and the space he needs to "burl" around.

King of large portions:
I know I live with a boy when I make a large dinner which should last us multiple meals and it only lasts as a dinner for two and his lunch the next day. Never mind the recipe states I will have 6 portions to go around. I have a hungry growing (muscles he says) man.

Does this ring a bell for anyone who has or does live with a boy? As I am 110% thankful for my man, goodness they are made differently! And you know what? Thats exactly how it was meant to be!

My Texas

2.27.2014

I'm a huge Pandora fan and yesterday was no exception. While scrubbing the apartment top to bottom I had the Josh Abbot Band station blaring. so many of his songs and others played on the Pandora station remind me so much of home, college, and two stepping with Joe. Talk about nostalgia hitting you right between the eyes. It made me so homesick so I thought I would share a little nostalgia and one of my favorite country songs.

My Texas by josh Abbott Band is pretty self explanatory but to promote just how great Texas is all bolded words are places I have been and seen in the great Lone Star State. I don't know many songs about New York…well I guess Jay Z pops into my head, but you can't two step to that one. Sorry boutchya

My Texas: Josh Abbott Band

If you haven't climbed up to Enchanted Rock,
Drank a cold Shiner down in Luckenbach,
Taken your baby to the River Walk
Then you ain't met My Texas yet.

If you haven't floated down the 'Ol Frio
Heard Red Dirt music on your radio,
Eaten Cooper's down in Llano,
Then you ain't met My Texas yet.

You haven't been to the Houston rodeo,
Sang "Carry On" at a Pat Green show,
If you ain't seen an Abilene sunset,
Then you ain't met My Texas yet.

If you never caught a trout down in Port A,
Heard the words to "Corpus Christi Bay",
Never seen fireworks on PK
Then you ain't met My Texas yet.

Havent had a kolache when you go through West,
Never heard of the Larry Joe Taylor fest,
Think polished pop country crap sounds the best,
Then you ain't met My Texas yet.

You haven't been to the Ft. Worth stock show
Sang along with Cory Morrow,
You ain't seen a hill country sunset,
Then you ain't met My Texas yet.

You say you haven't hiked through Big Bend,
Had your hair blown back by a Lubbock wind,
Been somewhere where they call you "friend"
then you ain't met My Texas yet.

You haven't been to the San Antone
rodeo,
Sang "Everclear" at a Creager show,
If you ain't seen an El Paso sunset,
Then you ain't met My Texas yet.

No, you ain't met My Texas yet!

Love this song so much! And I love the pride Texans have

Meet one of my favorite bloggers!

Cheers not Jeers

2.26.2014

This week I want to introduce to you these wonderful women who I had the pleasure of meeting for the first time this past Friday during Happy Hour Hangout
Cheers not Jeers Episode 14

Life After Athens
Margaret from Life After Athens is quite the hidden gem of this blog world. She has a witty sense of humor and I loved getting a glimpse of her collegiate love. Margaret and her husband are in the middle of the house buying process which I have loved getting to read about. Joe and I are entertaining the idea of becoming home owners and getting to see what others have gone through is encouraging as well as helps us to steer clear of sticky situations.
Their new house looks perfect and I can't wait to get the full online tour!

The Handey Way

Brooks from The Handey Way is just a breath of fresh air. She is a newlywed who shares her home with her hubby and two cute pups! These Southerners are living the nomad life, but more than ready to get back home. Brooks' most recent post about home hit a soft spot for me, because I too understand what it's like to long for home.

Now these are just 2 of the awesome women who I got to share my Friday night with, but be sure and check back for some must read blogs in the up coming weeks. And as always, take that time to spread a little cheer.

As bloggers, more importantly as women, it is often easy to get caught up in the strains and drains of life. Lets face it, life can just flat out SUCK at times. And I don't know about you, but I don't know anyone who doesn't love a sweet compliment or a simple thumbs up thrown their way. As motivation to spur a little female bonding around the "interwebs" I introduce to you this weekly link up "Cheers not Jeers"

This is your chance to build up some of your favorite women and showcase their talent through your blog and spread a little sisterly love.
How it works:
  • Every Wednesday join in the link up by including "Cheers" about your favorite bloggers. These are bloggers who spur your creativity, touch your heart, or keep you sane laughing.
  • Post a small shout out or devoted post to your blogger loves, creating more community between each other, while posting a link to their blog in your post so others many be inspired.
  • After linking up, find a new face, visit a new blog, introduce yourself and send them a "cheer"
Highly Encouraged:
There are no specific "rules" about following certain individuals in the link up, but just strongly encouraging women to seek out one another and offering praise instead of the negativity we can often see floating around the world wide web. I will personally visit each blog in the link up to see what an awesome impact this is making.

Cheers not Jeers

Have you visited my new adventure?

Iced Dark Roast with Cream Only…Please

2.25.2014

My usual adventure to Starbucks goes a little like this inside my head…

"Oh gosh, what size is medium? Tall? Grande? Tall has to be Taller than big? Oh gosh I forget is mine skinny? With Soy? I heard upside down makes it sweeter. Mocha or latte? One has chocolate….I think. Crap I still have yet to pick my size".

Then I hear audibly "Hi Welcome to Starbucks, may I take your order"

As if I'm attempting to keep all of the thoughts from becoming tangible word vomit…"uhhhhhh" is all I can muster.

Hence this is why in our last coffee date I divulged to readers that I just stick to Dunkin.
"I'll have a medium iced coffee with cream".  BAM tangible word vomit eversion complete.
Now that I have ranted about all things #FirstWorldProblems, I have a mess of sorts swirling in my head so I thought I'd share with you.

Its far too cold to venture out for an actual coffee date with you today, so I'll stay here, sip on some tea, and hope that you're soaking up more vitamin D than I am today.

If we were having coffee today:
// I would throw in speaking of Vitamin D,  I went for my annual check up and my Vitamin D levels were incredibly low. So I promise it's not all in my whiney head. This Southerner is having sun withdrawal.
// I'd share with your I have been blog revived! I was able to participate in Happy Hour Hangout with two of my favorite bloggers where I was motivated with new blogging tips and tricks. Need a revival? You must check it out.
// I'd tell you that Joe and I have been bit by the house buying bug…BAAAAAD. We are wrestling with the idea of it all because housing is entirely different up North. And we have been advised by many, that owning a house for less than 5 years isn't finically savvy. And the fact that we are entertaining this idea FREAKS our family out that we  may be here another 5 years. Yikes!
// I'd tell you that I'm looking into going back to school…thing is, I don't know what I want to be when I grow up.
// I'd tell you that Casey (third person attacks) going back to school would mean no new house. We can't afford the bills or stress of both.
// So then I'd tell you that now I'm looking at renting houses because I'm over the apartment life and I really want an animal, flower bed and walls to paint. Can I get an amen?
// I'd share with you I'm doing some serious promotion of Simply Chemistry and some of you will be bugged by me soon!
// I'd share that I'm excited about tomorrow being Hump Day, because as always, its Cheers not Jeers!

I am woman hear me ROAR

2.20.2014

So I want to share with your (as much as I can) about a mishap that happened at work that really, really hit me to the core. No, this is not about one of my patients (HIPPA prevents me from any and ALL of that), but one where my ego, feelings and motivation got stomped on repeatedly and I was that girl sobbing at work. Ugh looking back I wish I wouldn't have wasted those tears on an unfortunate excuse for a man, but I was hurt.

Let me back up a smidge. I don't often talk about work on the blog because work has it's own place and due to privacy policies, as well as social media policies in the healthcare work place, it just isn't anything that needs to come up that often.

I am not one to compare who has the worst life, but when someone tells you they are currently in nursing school…their life sucks more than yours. Sorry, but I believe it's true. Unless you're in law school, I've heard pretty brutal stories from that as well.
I honestly didn't know nursing school would be the literal death of my social life, and sleep life along with stress induced alopecia (look it up) and more breakdowns than I'd like to admit.
But you know what? I worked my tail off for my degree and I couldn't be more proud.
I put in countless sleepless nights for those two little letters behind my name, RN.

So what exactly does a day in the life of a RN include?
At the beginning of a 12 hour shift I receive report from the off going night nurse and begin to assess my 4-5 patients, pass medications, prep for procedures, advocate for patient's needs as a liaison between patient's and medical staff.
During a 12 hour shift I am required to check on each one of my patients at least once an hour, where I assess all health functions, and let me be the first to tell you, it's always more often than that.
To say I don't know whats going on with the health of my patient would not only be a false statement but one of arrogance and belittling assumptions.

When people think of a nurse, they tend to think females.
When people think of a doctor, the tend to think males.
A nurse who receives their bachelors in nursing attends school for 4 years
A doctor who received their "MD" may attend school for 10+ years

Does anyone see where this is going?
While I may have less schooling than that of a MD and while I may be a female, I am no less of a human being than anyone else who works at the hospital.
While that MD is continuing those 6 additional years of school, those are 6 years I have spent at the bedside assessing my patients for 12+ hours each day.
Did you know that's 12,500 more hours than a MD will get to spend at the bedside over the course of those 6 years?

So to tell me that I'm
"just a nurse who isn't prepared with those assessment qualifications"
                and that
"I  (MD) have probably been doing this long before you were born",
is just down right flagrant, arrogant and most of all horridly unprofessional.

I was broken down by a person's words which my momma always taught me shouldn't hurt me.
As an advocate of people's health you can often step on toes, which doesn't bother me in the slightest. It is my job to save lives I will be an annoying serial phone caller if the situation calls for it.
But when you bring my gender, age and profession into the mix you're about to bring out the monster inside of me.

Now I know this 110% vague but I had to let it out and I apologize if you don't follow. It's really as much detail I can offer.
Moral of the story? Stand up for what you believe in and what your gut tells you. Don't let anyone look down on you, but rise to the occasion and prove to them you have what it takes.
And let me tell you….thats exactly what I did!

Girl power! Hear me ROAR!

Disclaimer: This is in no way a reflection of what I think of doctors as a whole.
I have brilliant coworkers and doctors in my family and I love you all!

Please welcome Simply Chemistry!

It's all the groundhog's fault

2.14.2014

Grab your ear plugs folks because it's about to get whiney. If you're over complaints about the weather, just pass right on by me today. But I feel as if a vent sesh may take away the snow blues.

Now don't get me wrong…the snow is BEAUTIFUL. Everything slows down, the silence is almost too much at times. It's beautiful when I get to sit on the couch all day snuggled up with a cup of tea in my hand and Frank Sinatra playing in the background.

But, and this is a big BUT, when I'm expected to haul it to work before the plows awake, it puts me more than a little on edge. Thank the good Lord for all wheel drive because I would be SOL without it.

8-10 inches of snow is forecasted to fall at rates up to 3 inches per hour. I'll tell you why this makes me a sweaty anxious mess. I work all weekend, as in 40 hours in 3 days, Joe isn't home to help dig me out of the snow, so I'm basically a heaping pile of damsel in distress.

Alas, since I have no choice, and I must be at work to save the world and this venting session will just have to do me. I will mention I have awesome coworkers who I am thankful to be "stuck" with. That, and I'll reminisce about a beautiful honeymoon in the Bahamas with a "Bahama Mamma" in my hand.

Now back to your normal adult, not so whiney programing.
Have you met Simply Chemistry yet?

When pictures are priceless

2.13.2014

When planning our wedding budget I was given the advice to pick out the top 3 most important aspects of the wedding.
My top three aspects of the wedding were:

The Entertainment: We opted for a DJ who rocked classic rock music the entire evening and we couldn't have been happier.

Florals: I have dreams of designing florals for dreamy weddings one day so they had to be the best. Let's just say Joe calls me a "flower snob" which I accept graciously.

Most important though was the photographer. I had a vision in my head of what I wanted our wedding shots to look like. Stephanie of Stephanie Rose Photography, had the exact romantic style and feel I was looking for. I couldn't wait to see her work once the wedding was over.
Naturally, I'm always looking for great ways to showcase out wedding photos.

When Easy Canvas Prints asked me if I would like to review their company for an 8x10 canvas print, I jumped at the idea.  Canvas+My favorite wedding pictures= One happy woman!

One of the few wonderful things about Easy Canvas Prints, is the customer service is phenomenal. As I wanted to make sure my canvas would be perfect, I had plenty of questions and Stephanie of "Blogger Outreach" was nothing but patient and pleasant with my requests.

The canvas is heavy duty and beautiful quality. It can often be hard to print in such detail on small canvas, but I was pleasantly surprised.

Another small, but huge benefit is the bracket that comes already attached. I hadn't planned on receiving the canvas with one already in place, but I was excited to see such quality out of an online company.
Easy Canvas Prints wants to offer YOU 50% off of canvas prints for all readers. I'm telling you, they are wonderful to work with.

Easy Canvas Prints provided the 8x10 canvas free of charge in return for my thoughts and opinions which are solely my own.

Cheers not Jeers Episode 12
I'm so glad to have you back this week as we spread positivity across the blogsphere. This week I have just been in awe of the positivity I have received from all the this little blog's readers. I have been incredibly nervous to announce the creation of Simply Chemistry, not for fear that it would get bad reviews, but that I was putting something that I love out on the line, and there was fear that it could be rejected.

I mean come on who is or hasn't been crippled by the fear of rejection? It can be a daily struggle. I want YOU to know that you keep my faith in humanity alive. Everyone has shown me love and support for my new creative outlet and I'm humbled by ALL of your kind words.

So this week my Cheers not Jeers goes out to YOU, yes you! Even is this is your first page click my direction, I'm thankful that you want to read along with my adventures as well as try and spread some positivity. You my friend are a light in this world and I am thankful to Y-O-U. To my seasoned readers, I don't know where this space would be without your support, and love. Even though I have not met most of you, I know what a genuine person you are and if I could teleport, I'd be right there with you! Thank you for the fellowship and laughs and more importantly thanks for just being YOU!

So yes this is a "blanket" of sorts, but one that I felt was needed this week. Your compassion never goes unnoticed! Please spread some positivity today so that you may make someone else feel like a million bucks, just as you have done for me.

Cheers not Jeers

Simply Chemistry

2.10.2014

So I promise I have a reason why I have been MIA from the blogging world last week.

Have you ever wanted to take the leap? Wanted to say yes to something but too afraid of failure?
Yes I'm sure you're all nodding your head in agreement. Too many times to count I have heard people say "If only I could do ______ for a living" "Oh wouldn't it be awesome to get to do ______ as a source of income?"
I am guilty of those big dreams that I find myself slipping into day dreams of more and more.
So I'm taking the leap. A very, very tiny leap, but leap nonetheless.

I am ALWAYS crafting, it's literally my calm in this raging sea called life.  I decided to find an outlet to share my creations, not to mention decrease inventory and clear the clutter in our guest bedroom, and living room, and kitchen, and bedroom . So without further ado I want to introduce to you

As many of you know I tend to have a "thing" for all things chemistry related. I mean heck I went and married a Chemist so I guess you can say it started there.

Chemistry (noun): A reaction, taken to be instinctual, between two persons
I fell in love and married a brainy Inorganic Chemist. Only after he proved to be a worthy tutor when I earned an A in my Intro to Chemistry freshman college course many moons ago. Being a lover of the sciences, Simply Chemistry offers modern decor for your homes. With revolving inventory, our store is ever changing to keep up with the crafty cravings.

Simply Chemistry plays on the aspect of chemistry in the form of relationships. Even though the items in my shop are not necessarily chemistry or love related, you will find an overall Chemistry theme.
I wanted to create something that I could change around as often as I get a new craft itch (QUITE frequently).
Currently in the shop:
Watercolor Prints
Tissue Tassel Garland
Glitter Dipped Feathers

No I'm not looking to make the bucks from this, but as I said have an outlet for my creating habits. I hope you will stop by and share Simply Chemistry with your friends who you may think will be interested!

I do apologize for being MIA…did you like how the hubby took over the blog this week? I had NO idea he was planning anything like that. Thanks for letting him get all mushy. But on to the main event! Will you be joining us to spread Cheers not Jeers this week?

Cheers not Jeers Episode 11
I'm so glad to have you back this week as we spread positivity across the blogsphere.

Voyage of the Mee Mee
Meet Amanda, who is the lovable author over at Voyage of the MeeMee. Come on, I know you want to know the background behind "Mandie's" blog name. I love that Amanda can show her quirky almost sassy (in a good way) comical self, as well as really dig into the hard subjects of life. I mean she had me rolling with her idea of making Mr. Groundhog her most recent mantle piece. And then she hit my heart  by compelling women to love themselves instead of comparing themselves to what the media may portray.

Meet Ashley from Married to the Game, another hockey wife (which I know NOTHING about sorry Ashley!). I enjoy reading her adventures as a wife to the game in which she follows her hubby around as he is basically a super star. Another awesome fact? Ashley is originally from the Albany area so we have been able to chat all things Capital District. She definitely misses home though and her super lovable looking "Bear".

Check these lovely ladies out and be sure to link up to share positivity around your favorite blogs!
And while we're at it…have you seen this fabulous Hump Day Hop?
